Circumcision removes the foreskin, the fold of skin that covers the head of the penis. At The Clifford Surgery it is done as a day surgery for men and for boys from 8 years old. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and you go home the same day. Dr Law Zhi Wei performs every circumcision here. He trained at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and has performed more than 2,000 circumcisions. The Clifford Surgery is an MOH-approved Ambulatory Surgery Centre at Raffles Place. We offer male circumcision only.

Men and Boys From 8, Day Surgery

How Circumcision Day Surgery Is Done

Men choose circumcision for a tight foreskin, repeated foreskin infections, hygiene, or personal and religious reasons. Boys can be treated from 8 years old. At that age most boys can stay still and calm under local anaesthetic, with sedation if needed. Younger children are referred to a paediatric surgery centre.

You first see Dr Law at a consultation. He examines the foreskin, explains each method and the risks, and agrees the method with you. The consultation is $100 before GST and is waived if you go ahead. Tell him about any blood thinners, bleeding problems or diabetes. There is no single preferred method. Dr Law chooses with you after the examination.

Local anaesthetic numbs the area after the sting of the injection. Sedation or general anaesthesia can be added, and then someone takes you home. You rest in the recovery area until you feel ready, and a nurse goes through your aftercare sheet.

Rest for 1 to 2 days. Most men are back at work and most boys back at school in about 1 week. Full healing takes 4 to 6 weeks. Avoid sport and swimming for about 4 weeks, and sex for 4 to 6 weeks. Call the clinic if the staples are still on after 3 weeks.

Circumcision method How it works Closure
ZSR stapler A disposable device cuts the foreskin and closes the edge with fine staples in one step Staples drop out around 1 to 2 weeks
Shang Ring Two plastic rings clamp the foreskin, which is trimmed above the ring Removed at 10 to 14 days in adults, off at 1 to 2 weeks in boys
Conventional The foreskin is removed with a scalpel and the edge is stitched Dissolving stitches
Laser or diathermy The foreskin is cut with a laser or diathermy, which seals small vessels as it cuts Dissolving stitches

Device methods such as the ZSR stapler and Shang Ring take less operating time than conventional surgery. A systematic review found shorter operating times and fewer infections with suture devices than with conventional circumcision.
